For me, cinematography starts well before the camera comes out. I like digging into an idea with a director, figuring out what the project should feel like, and then working backward to determine how lighting, lenses, movement, color, and composition can get us there. I’m equally comfortable with a carefully planned commercial set or a smaller crew where we need to react quickly to what’s happening in front of us. The tools and approach can change dramatically from project to project. That’s part of what keeps the work interesting!
