How to hire a cameraman, camera crew or film crew in New Orleans

Map the locations against the permit rules. A shoot inside a Warehouse District office, on a Marigny sidewalk and in Jackson Square are three very different permits and price tags. List the addresses, dates, parking needs, crew size and deliverables in a video production brief.

Match the crew to the job. For commercials and brand campaigns, look at Fire on the Bayou, Image Video Solutions or FatHappy Media. For conferences and corporate events, NolaVid, Video Productions USA or MCat Media. For a film look on 8mm or 16mm, Worklight Pictures. For stage space, Second Line Stages, and for aerials, the drone teams.

Get insurance and paperwork in early. Film New Orleans wants a filming application, a certificate of insurance and signed Policies and Procedures, and location permits need a block schematic and a neighborhood notification flyer. Our video production insurance guide covers what to ask a crew for.

Filming permits in New Orleans, from the French Quarter to the parks
- Film permit: all productions and student films shooting in Orleans Parish apply to Film New Orleans, which reviews each project and decides which permit type it needs. News reporting and filming of rallies or protests do not need one. Send the application at least 4 days before filming. The Film Office phone is (504) 658-4341.

- Parking: No Parking signs must be posted 24 hours in advance, and the production posts and removes them. All street and lane closures also need approval from Traffic Engineering at the Department of Public Works.
- Parks: book through Parks and Parkways at (504) 658-3201, with a liability certificate naming the City as holder and a contract signed at least two weeks ahead.
- Drones: only FAA-certified operators, with the pilot’s license and the drone’s registration sent to the Film Office. In the French Quarter, the Film Office asks for a drone no more than 3 feet across. Drone filming can go on a free B-roll permit.
