How to book a Houston camera crew, cameraman or film crew

Camera drone in flight over trees
01

Put the shoot on one page. List the date, call time, each address, how many cameras, audio and lighting needs and what you want delivered. Houston is spread out, so name every stop, whether it’s downtown, the Energy Corridor or a site out toward the coast, so crews can price drive time. Start from our video production brief template.

02

Ask two or three vendors to quote. Send that page to crews from the lists above. Ask what gear comes with the day, how overtime and mileage are billed, who keeps the footage and whether editing is included.

03

Register with the city and line up insurance. For general public property inside City of Houston limits, file the Houston Film Commission registration form and a $1 million liability certificate before you roll. Parks, amplified sound and street or lane closures need extra steps, all covered in the commission’s production FAQ. For statewide incentives, see the Texas Film Commission, and read our guide to video production insurance.

Houston camera crew and film crew FAQs

How much does it cost to hire a camera crew in Houston?

We can’t give you a number, because none of the Houston vendors on this page publish rates on ProductionHelp. A quote usually depends on crew size, the length of the day, the camera, sound and lighting package, drive time between locations and whether editing is included. Send the same brief to two or three crews and compare them line by line.

Do I need a permit to film in Houston?

For general public property inside City of Houston limits, the Houston Film Commission asks you to file its registration form before the shoot, along with a certificate of insurance showing $1 million in liability coverage per incident. The commission numbers, signs and returns the form, and you keep a copy on set. It says this registration is informational and is not itself a permit for city, county, state, federal or private property. Most city parks need a separate park permit, amplified playback needs a sound permit, and blocking a lane or street means hiring City of Houston police officers. Call the commission at 713-853-8386 to confirm what your shoot needs.

Should I hire a freelance cameraman or a production company in Houston?

A freelance cameraman or director of photography is usually enough for interviews, testimonials, B-roll and single-camera event coverage. A production company makes more sense when you need scripting, several crew roles, multiple cameras or a finished edit. South Coast Media Services, Up in the Air Films and Wildcatter Video Productions list full production, while Donald Kilgore, Orlando Briones and Buck Hatcher work as individual DPs and camera operators.

Is there a Houston DP for food or product shoots?

Buck Hatcher lists 34 years in the industry and works as a tabletop director of photography for food. For stage work with a controlled background, Studio 713 lists a large commercial green screen room.

Who films weddings in Houston?

Khanh Nguyen, 74stmedia and Ryan O’Ryan all list wedding video work, and Ryan O’Ryan’s profile mentions Indian, Pakistani and South Asian weddings. Koyfman Photo and Video Production covers weddings in Houston and Galveston County.

Can I get drone footage in Houston?

Yes. Drone Houston lists FAA Part 107 certification and aerial work for real estate, hotels, golf courses, construction and oil and gas sites, and Houston Drone Video Co. focuses on aerial cinematography for businesses. Up in the Air Films includes drone work in its full-service offering.

How do I add my Houston video business to ProductionHelp?

Listing is free. Use the submit form, pick categories that match what you do, such as Camera Operators / Videographers, Drone / Aerial DP or Wedding / Special Event Videographers, and add your city, a reel and the kinds of shoots you take.
