How to hire a cameraman, camera crew or film crew in Austin

Write a one-page brief. List the date, call time, address, number of cameras, audio and lighting needs and what you want delivered. Say whether you need gear such as a Steadicam, gimbal or drone. Traffic on I-35, MoPac and 183 can eat an hour, so note load-in times and parking for Downtown, South Congress and the Domain. Our guide to writing a production brief has a template.

Send it to two or three crews from the lists above. Ask what camera package is included, how overtime and travel are billed, who owns the footage and whether editing is part of the price.

Clear your location. For City of Austin right-of-way (streets, sidewalks, alleys or reserved public parking), apply through the AB+C portal under ROW Permits / Film, following the Office of Special Events film permit steps. You will need a site plan, APD film-safety approval, insurance and neighbor notifications. The Austin Film Commission permits guide explains which city offices handle roads, parks and other public land (the commission itself does not issue permits). For statewide incentive and location questions, see the Texas Film Commission. Private venues such as hotels, ranches and the convention center need their own written OK. See video production insurance before you sign anything.

Austin camera crew FAQs
Do I need one cameraman or a full camera crew in Austin?
One cameraman is enough for a talking-head interview, a short social clip or simple event coverage. Hire a full camera crew when the shoot needs a director of photography, lighting and grip, a sound mixer or more than one camera. That is typical for commercials, SXSW and conference keynotes, branded films and multi-cam livestreams. Companies on this page such as Onion Creek Productions, Mosaic Media Films, LocalEyes and Hen’s Bread Productions list full-service production, so you can start small and add crew as the plan grows.
How much does it cost to hire a camera crew in Austin?
The Austin vendors on this page do not publish day rates on their ProductionHelp profiles, so we do not quote numbers. Your price will depend on crew size, shoot hours, the camera and lighting package, travel inside Travis and Williamson counties, parking downtown or on the east side, and whether editing is included. Send the same written brief to two or three crews and compare the quotes line by line.
Do I need a film permit to shoot in Austin?
The Austin Film Commission does not issue permits, but it explains who does. The City of Austin requires a permit to film on or commercially use public property such as roads, sidewalks and parks. Right-of-way filming (including b-roll that affects streets or parking) goes through the Transportation and Public Works Office of Special Events via the AB+C portal. You also need an Austin Police Department film-safety review and proof of insurance. Commercial ROW applications are typically due at least 3 business days before you shoot, and the APD piece at least 5 business days ahead. Filming entirely on private property usually does not need a city film permit unless you add pyrotechnics, weapons or stunts.
What neighborhoods and areas do Austin crews cover?
Most crews on this page list Austin as their base and work across Downtown, South Congress, East Austin, the Domain, South Austin and nearby suburbs such as Round Rock, Georgetown, Kyle and Leander. Ask about travel time on MoPac, I-35 and 183, and confirm parking or load-in rules for venues on Rainey Street, the Convention Center and private ranches in the Hill Country.
Which Austin vendors shoot drone footage?
Hen’s Bread Productions lists drone alongside multi-camera and livestream work. Austin Drone Company, Ramblr Media, Violet Crown Aerial and ATX DRONEz are aerial specialists. One Wall Media and ZABE Media add drone and listing video for real estate. Ask any pilot for their FAA Part 107 certificate and proof of insurance, and check airspace early near Austin-Bergstrom and other airports.
Can I hire an Austin camera operator for a wedding or event?
Yes. Waterloo Films and Photohouse Films list wedding and special-event video work. ATX DRONEz also lists event media. Expressions In Video, Arise Media Studio and Bennett Creative cover corporate and branded events.
