How to hire a cameraman, camera crew or film crew in Orange County

Write the brief. Note each shoot date and location, the city it sits in, how many cameras, and whether you need sound, lighting, a stage, live streaming or editing. Orange County cities each run their own permits, so the city matters as much as the address. Our video production brief template covers the rest.

Get two or three quotes. Send the same brief to crews from the lists above and ask what gear is included, how travel between Irvine, Anaheim, the beach cities and Los Angeles is billed, how overtime works and who keeps the raw footage.

Line up the permit. Check the lead time for the city you are filming in, from one week in Irvine to three weeks in Santa Ana, and have the business license and insurance certificate ready. Our guide to video production insurance explains the certificates crews are usually asked for.

Filming permits and locations in Orange County
Orange County has no single countywide film office. Each of its cities issues its own film permit, and the County of Orange handles unincorporated areas and county property. What to expect in the three biggest cities on this page:
- Irvine: a Film Permit covers commercial, nonprofit and student filming, including still photography, on public or private property. The city lists a $92 nonrefundable fee, a City of Irvine business license and $1 million / $2 million general liability insurance. Apply a week ahead, or up to four weeks for major productions or park shoots. UC Irvine and the regional parks need their own permission.
- Santa Ana: email the film permit application at least three weeks before the first shoot day; late applications are not accepted. After approval the city asks for a business license, a site plan, a location agreement for private property and Orange County Fire Authority approval, plus an insurance certificate 10 business days ahead for public property.
- Anaheim: Public Works takes film permit applications five working days ahead, and the permit stays on set. Adjacent property owners get written notice 48 hours ahead when a shoot affects street parking, sidewalks or noise. Traffic control requests go to the police department 90 days out.
- County land and regional parks: unincorporated areas need a County of Orange film permit with $1 million liability insurance naming the county, and filming on county roads needs an encroachment permit applied for at least a month ahead. OC Parks issues separate photo and film permits.

Orange County camera crew and film crew FAQs
How much does it cost to hire a camera crew in Orange County?
None of the Orange County listings on this page publish a day rate, so pricing comes from a written quote. Send two or three crews the same brief with dates, locations, camera count, sound, lighting, studio and editing needs, then compare exactly what each quote covers. Our guide to what a camera operator costs explains how most crew quotes are built.
Who issues film permits in Orange County?
There is no single countywide film office. Each city issues its own permit: Irvine through its Community and Library Services film permit, Santa Ana through its Film Permit office and Anaheim through Public Works. Shoots on unincorporated county land need a County of Orange film permit, and OC Parks issues its own permits for regional parks.
Do I need a permit to film in Irvine?
Yes, for commercial, nonprofit or student filming, including still photography, on public or private property in Irvine. The city lists a $92 nonrefundable application fee, a City of Irvine business license and general liability insurance of $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. Apply at least one week ahead, or up to four weeks for major productions or park shoots. Filming entirely inside a dedicated studio generally does not need a permit.
How far ahead should I apply in Santa Ana and Anaheim?
Santa Ana wants its film permit application at least three weeks before the first shoot day and does not accept late applications. Anaheim asks for its application five working days ahead, but traffic control requests go to the Anaheim Police Department 90 days before filming, and effects or open flames need 10 days notice to Anaheim Fire and Rescue.
Can I hire a single camera operator instead of a full company?
Yes. ESI Video lists camera operations, including single-camera event coverage and multi-camera webcasts, and The Video Man Productions records events directly with the owner. Companies such as The Corporate Film Guys, 7 Hills Productions or 336 Productions suit projects that also need planning, scripting and editing.
Where can I rent a studio or stage in Orange County?
Orange County Production Studios in Irvine lists 10,000 square feet with stages open 24/7, Red Gum Studios in Anaheim has a 6,000-square-foot stage with green screen and a pool, Load Bearing Studios in Santa Ana has a cyclorama wall, and Ziba Photo Video rents studio space by the hour near SNA airport. MVT Productions also lists an on-site studio with a large green screen.
Who can live stream a corporate event in Orange County?
ESI Video lists live streaming and multi-camera live switched webcasts, MVT Productions lists live streaming and live concerts, Orange County Production Studios lists live broadcast and webcasting, and FG|PG produces live, virtual and hybrid events.
