How to hire a cameraman, camera crew or film crew in San Diego

Write the brief around the location. A beach, a park, a downtown street and a hotel ballroom each come with different rules and lead times. List the address, dates, camera count, sound, lighting and editing needs. Our video production brief template walks through it.

Match the crew to the job. For corporate, broadcast or commercial work, start with the production companies. For a ceremony or celebration, use the wedding and event list. For aerial shots over the coast or downtown, ask the drone crews about FAA authorization before you book.

Collect two or three quotes and the paperwork. Send the same brief to each crew and compare what is included: hours, overtime, editing rounds and who keeps the raw footage. If you shoot on public property, line up the insurance certificate early. Our guide to video production insurance explains the usual coverage.

Filming permits and locations in San Diego
The San Diego Film Office handles filming on City of San Diego property. Neighboring cities and the bay front have their own offices. What to expect:
- City property: streets, sidewalks, parks, beaches, piers, lakes and libraries all need film authorization, requested online through the City’s EProval system. The authorization itself is free, though hourly staffing or venue fees may apply. Contact the Film Office at 619-685-1340 or Film@SanDiego.gov.
- Lead time: at least three full business days for a low-impact shoot, one week when you need a street closure, intermittent traffic control, weapons or a drone, and two weeks for water contact, smoke, fog or pyrotechnics.
- Insurance: commercial general liability and auto liability of $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate, naming the City as additional insured, plus proof of workers’ compensation. The insurer must be licensed in California.
- Port of San Diego: tidelands along the bay, including much of the waterfront, are a separate jurisdiction with their own film permit, so check who owns the spot before you schedule.
