How to hire a cameraman, camera crew or film crew in Detroit

Write the brief. Note the dates, every location, how many cameras, whether you need sound, lighting, a grip truck, a drone or a live feed, and the deliverables. Flag any park, plaza, river, freeway or People Mover location, since each needs its own permission. Our video production brief template covers the rest.

Collect two or three quotes. Send the same brief to crews from the lists above and ask what gear is included, how travel to Ann Arbor, Lansing or the suburbs is billed, whether the crew is union or non-union, how overtime works and who keeps the raw footage.

File the permit early. Read the Detroit Film Office permit FAQ, send the film permit application two weeks before the first shoot day, and check the film permit insurance requirements. Our guide to video production insurance explains the certificates crews are often asked for.

Filming permits and locations in Detroit
The Detroit Film Office, part of the City of Detroit, issues a no-fee general Film Permit and a B-roll Film Permit and acts as the liaison with other city departments. Here is what a Detroit shoot usually involves:
- Email the permit application with a site plan for each location, showing vehicles, generators, condors, camera positions and where No Parking signs go. Signs must be posted 48 hours before the start time.
- Include the drone pilot license and drone serial number, or the location agreement, when they apply.
- To close a street, lane or sidewalk, the film office routes an Intermittent Traffic Control request to the Detroit Police Department, which arranges the cost and on-site officers. Get written approval from businesses and residents on the affected block.
- Downtown parks such as Campus Martius, Grand Circus Park, Beacon Park, Cadillac Square and Capitol Park need a request through Downtown Detroit Partnership. Belle Isle goes through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and the Detroit Riverfront has its own application.
- Reserving metered parking or a group parking arrangement goes through the city’s Municipal Parking office.

Detroit camera crew and film crew FAQs
How much does it cost to hire a camera crew in Detroit?
None of the Detroit listings on this page publish a day rate, so plan on written quotes. TC Drone Photography says every quote is done on an individual basis, and the production companies price per project. Send the same brief to two or three crews and compare gear, editing, travel and overtime line by line. Our guide to what a camera operator costs explains how most quotes are built.
Do I need a film permit to shoot in Detroit?
Yes. The Detroit Film Office issues a no-fee general Film Permit and a B-roll Film Permit for work inside the city. Send the permit application to the film office two weeks before the first shoot date, and allow more time for street closures, freeways, bridges and special effects. A permit is typically issued within 48 to 72 hours once the application is complete, and a copy of the permit and insurance certificate must be on set.
Does a Detroit film permit need insurance?
Every application needs a certificate of insurance that lists the City of Detroit as the certificate holder, except requests for B-roll only or interior only filming. The film office does not sell insurance, so the production or crew provides its own.
Which Detroit locations need extra permission?
The film office lists parks, Spirit Plaza, Hart Plaza, the Joe Louis Fist, Belle Isle, freeways, bridges, the People Mover and the Detroit River as places you cannot film without permission, along with private property, murals, business signs and stopping traffic. Belle Isle is run by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and has its own application, and the downtown parks such as Campus Martius and Grand Circus Park go through Downtown Detroit Partnership.
Can I fly a drone on a Detroit shoot?
Drone use needs permission from the Detroit Film Office, and the permit application asks for the drone pilot license and the drone serial number. Detroit Drone Squad and Knightwing Media list FAA certified or licensed pilots, Ahptic Productions lists multiple drones, and Trillium Production Co lists drone filming. Ask for the Part 107 certificate with the quote.
Should I hire a freelance cameraman or a production company in Detroit?
For a small ENG crew or extra camera operators on a production you are directing, Trillium Production Co says it scales from small crews to larger union or non-union teams. For a scripted brand film or commercial with a finished edit, start with Green Sky, Avalon Films, Woodward Original or Full View Productions. Ahptic Productions adds grip trucks and its own post-production facility.
Who can film or stream a live event in Detroit?
Luma Detroit runs mobile broadcast trucks that record, edit and broadcast in real time for corporate events, concerts, motorsports and sports. Trillium Production Co lists livestream and multi-camera podcast setups, and Michigan Drone Company lists live-streaming for remote event attendees.
