How to hire a cameraman, camera crew or film crew in St. Louis

Write the brief. Note the dates, every location, how many cameras, whether you need sound, lighting, a drone or a studio, and the deliverables. Mark any street, sidewalk or park location, and any shoot in a St. Louis County town, since each has its own rules. Our video production brief template covers the rest.

Collect two or three quotes. Send the same brief to crews from the lists above and ask what gear is included, how travel across the river or out to St. Charles County is billed, how overtime works and who keeps the raw footage.

Register and line up permits early. Register with the St. Louis Film Office, read its Location Manager Toolbox, and apply for a Blocking Right of Way Permit at least a week out if you will take a lane or sidewalk. Our guide to video production insurance explains the certificates crews are often asked for.

Filming permits and locations in St. Louis
The St. Louis Film Office, run by Explore St. Louis, is the liaison between productions and local residents. It does not sell a film permit itself, so the work is knowing which office handles each part of the shoot:
- Register the production with the film office first, and give its scouting letter to businesses and residents you approach about locations.
- To block any part of a street, sidewalk or curb lane in the city, get a Street Department Blocking Right of Way Permit, with a traffic control plan and a mobility and ADA access plan. Blocking runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays unless extended hours are approved, and you supply your own barricades.
- Parks shoots go through the Parks Department, and police activity, simulated gunfire or driving shots go through the Police Department.
- In St. Louis County, each of the 90+ municipalities handles its own services, so call city hall where you plan to film.
- Hand out a filming notice within one block of the set and truck line, and send the film office your shooting schedule and daily call sheets.

St. Louis camera crew and film crew FAQs
How much does it cost to hire a camera crew in St. Louis?
No St. Louis listing on this page publishes a day rate, so plan on written quotes. Ztech Aerial notes an hourly option for short drone jobs, and every other crew prices per project. Send the same brief to two or three crews, then compare gear, editing, travel and overtime line by line. If the shoot blocks a curb lane with meters, the Street Department also asks you to rent those meters. Our guide to what a camera operator costs explains how most quotes are built.
Do I need a film permit to shoot in St. Louis?
The St. Louis Film Office does not issue traditional filming permits, but it asks every production to register. In the City of St. Louis, blocking street or sidewalk traffic needs a Street Department permit, filming in a park goes through the Parks Department, and police activity, simulated gunfire or driving shots go through the Police Department. Private property needs the owner’s permission, and b-roll of landmarks, seals and signs needs no permit or clearance.
How far ahead should I apply to block a street or sidewalk?
Apply for a Blocking Right of Way Permit at least one week before the shoot, or two weeks ahead for large or long requests. The application needs a traffic control plan and a mobility and ADA access plan. Standard blocking hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, and the No Parking signs must go up 24 hours before you block.
What about filming in St. Louis County suburbs?
The St. Louis Film Office covers the city plus the 90+ municipalities in St. Louis County, and each municipality runs its own city services. Contact city hall in the town where you are filming. Shoots outside the city and county go through the Missouri Film Office.
Does Missouri offer a film tax credit?
Yes. The St. Louis Film Office describes the Missouri Motion Media Production Tax Credit as a 20% base credit with upticks to as much as 42%, capped at $16 million a year. Projects under 30 minutes need at least $50,000 in spending and longer projects at least $100,000.
Which St. Louis crews fly drones?
Motion Eye Drone Services and Bird’s Eye View Drone & Marketing Services both list Part 107 certification, Haller Concepts lists FAA approved drones, and STL Drone Tours flies indoor fly-throughs. Timeless Aerial Photography, Ztech Aerial, STL From Above, PixVid and Front Door Media also list aerial video. Commercial drone pilots fly under FAA Part 107 rules, so ask for the certificate with the quote.
Should I hire a freelance cameraman or a production company in St. Louis?
For a single shooter, a news-style shoot or extra crew on your own production, look at D Ferg Productions, ProPhotoSTL or St. Louis Video Crews. For a documentary, a brand film or a training series with scripting and a finished edit, start with StoryTrack Studio, Once Films, Mike Martin Media or CN Video. Bad Dog Pictures can supply crew, gear and a sound stage together.
